It's amazing what adding 100 miles to my weekly average cycling distance is doing for my metabolism.

Just means you can eat more donuts!

I've taken to assigning "mile equivalents" to calorie counts. Knowing that a jelly donut is equivalent to three miles of running is enough to make me think twice about eating it...

Don't that do something nifty?

(YAY for the Triplets of Belleville icon!)

hmm, I need to try that. I commuted by bike three days this week, making about 27 miles.

Did you see any of the articles about Michael Phelps's diet when he was competing at the Olympics? He was consuming 12,000 calories a day. That's about 10,000 more than the typical diet listed in the RDA panels.

9-12k calories is typical for cyclists doing stage races, which involve perhaps 200km at 20-25 mph. So it surprises me that Phelps would do that when he was doing events no more than 7 minutes apiece. Ah, that's his *training* diet; he was probably eating a lot less at competitions.

And yes, food...disappears when I'm riding a lot.

I think there's also a certain amount of calories being burned trying to keep warm: being immersed in water sucks away body heat way better than air.

Are you riding to That Ice Cream Party this year?

(I'm not, I think)

I had a big plan to bike *from* That Ice Cream Party up to Montreal, where there is a Worldcon planning meeting the following weekend. But now I have this job thing, and I'm also not feeling the lack of quality biking time right now.

What amuses me is that you can already hide behind a flagpole. What next-- a chain-link fence? *grin*

In the sense of "how fast do you have to run from the bear", I think he only has to hide behind...me. (Yes, I'm the same order of skinny as [info]palmwiz...)
